The 10 Best Get Paid to Write Sites

This is a list of some of the best places to get paid to write at. These are the best sites that have been around for years and have paid thousands of writers each month for their hard work. Take a look at the list to see which ones you might want to write for. I hope you enjoy the list!

10. Suite 101

Suite101.com is an online magazine for which freelance writers provide content. Writers are selected from among applicants who must submit samples for review. Approved writers for the site are contractually obligated to provide a minimum amount of content for any of the site's 3,000 topics, and receive a portion of ad revenue as compensation. All submitted work is reviewed by the site's editorial staff.  Suite101.com has some 3,000 topic categories for its information, "ranging from keeping fit by trampolining to how to travel with a cat." Writers are expected to provide keyword-driven articles for any of the topics. Topics are organized into broader sections, each of which is overseen by a staff editor.

Prospective writers must submit two sample works for review. If accepted as a Contributing Writer, he or she receives "micropayments" of royalties from ads on that writer's page. The percentage of the royalty rises at predetermined numbers of posted articles. A writer receives a close review of his or her work after the first and tenth article submissions. After ten articles are posted, writers may apply to become the Feature Writer for one of the site's topics. Feature Writers receive a higher royalty percentage, and are expected to contribute more frequently to the site. -Wikipedia.org

9. Demand Media

Demand Media, Inc. is a privately held online media company that operates leading online brands such as eHow, Livestrong.com and Cracked, and is known for creating online content based on a combination of measured consumer demand and predicted ROI. The company also provides social media platforms to existing large company websites and distributes content bundled with social media tools to outlets around the web. The company also owns eNom, the world’s second-largest domain registrar.

Demand Media is one of the largest buyers of articles and video for the Internet through its website. Demand Studios pays thousands of freelance writers, editors and filmmakers to contribute text and video. Contributors choose among available titles that were previously identified by the company's algorithm. They are paid once their work has been automatically checked for plagiarism and is approved by editors. Typical compensation is $20 for a video clip, $15 for an article of a few hundred words, $2.50 for copy-editing an article and $1 for fact-checking an article. Thousands of titles are written and produced each month. The company says it paid out more than $13.6 million to contributors between its creation in January 2008 and June 2009. -Wikipedia.org

8. Helium

Helium.com, Inc. is a website where active writers are paid for contributing articles, and visitors can read these articles for free. User generated content in a given title is rated up or down by other writers in a form of peer review system. As with social news sites like Digg or Reddit, user ratings determine the rank of an article. In this case, however, the ones who rate are the writers, and multiple answers/articles exist and compete in most topics. In turn, high-rated articles receive more page views and earn more money for writers. According to Alexa's website global traffic rankings, Helium.com's rank has increased significantly in the last six months and is now consistently better than 3000 as of March 2009. The site's number of users has grown from over 5,000 in October 2006 to 100,000 in February 2008.

Helium earns income through Adsense and pays a share of the ad revenue earned by each article to the writer of that article. The sum paid to the writer is claimed to also include an amount based on the rank of their article and the page views, however the formula is not disclosed. The actual income earned by the article and the percentage share paid to the writer is also not disclosed, and may be changed at any time. -Wikipedia.org

7. Triond

Triond.com is a website where active members are paid for contributing content of any type or format. Visitors can view the content for free through any one of Triond's publication websites. User generated content is published to websites controlled by Triond, or to partner web-publishers based on it's topic and language. Triond publishes content in many different formats.

Triond enforces simple rules for publication:
* Content must be the original work of the submitter
* Content must be first published on Triond
* Content must not contain illegal material or infringe on a third-party copyright
* In order to publish content from a third-party, Submitter must obtain permission from original author
* Content must not contain any derogatory, offensive, unlawful, harmful, threatening, vulgar, profane, abusive, harassing, obscene, pornographic, defamatory or tortuous material.

Triond pays it's members through Paypal, Western Union, or check. -Wikipedia.org

6. HubPages

HubPages is a website designed around sharing advertising revenue for high-quality, user-generated content. The interface allows members to create individual pages on specific topics. HubPages differs from many other revenue-sharing sites by using the Google AdSense API to manage the revenue split with writers. HubPages is a user generated content site. Users (known as Hubbers) submit magazine-style articles which are posted as individual webpages (referred to as Hubs). Unlike some other user content sites, Hubbers retain all intellectual property rights to their Hubs, and can delete them at any time.  HubPages earns revenue through Google Adsense ads which appear on Hubs. They can also earn income by opting to include Kontera contextual ads, or by using eBay and Amazon.com advertising capsules. In each case, the Hubber must be a member of the corresponding affiliate program as an individual, because income is paid directly by the affiliate company, not by HubPages. The 60:40 revenue split is achieved by alternating the code used in advertisements: the Hubber's code is displayed 60% of the time, and HubPages' code 40%. -Wikipedia.org

5. Examiner

Examiner.com is a media company based in Denver, Colorado, that operates a network of hyperlocal news websites, allowing citizen journalists to share their city-based knowledge on a blog-like platform, in 238 markets throughout the United States and parts of Canada. Examiner.com is a division of Clarity Media Group, with the primary investor being conservative businessman, billionaire Philip Anschutz, owner of Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), Regal Cinemas, and other media and entertainment companies. Examiner.com claims to have 40,000 contributors, commonly referred to as "Examiners", in addition to the citizen journalists at NowPublic, a Vancouver-based website purchased by Examiner.com in September 2009. The company has been criticized for the low compensation received by many "Examiners", and the lack of editorial oversight, including accusations of plagiarism. Examiners are paid based on page views, or the "Gawker-model", made famous by the blog Gawker.com. The more page views an Examiner generates, the more they are reportedly paid. During 2009 many of the writers were receiving .01 per page view. Examiner.com later offered a variety of pay scale options to their writers. -Wikipedia.org

4. Squidoo

Squidoo is a community website that allows users to create pages (called lenses) for subjects of interest. Squidoo is in the top 500 most visited sites in the world, and in the top 300 most viewed in the United States. Squidoo grew 91% in 2008, and had 900,000 handbuilt lenses as of February 1st, 2009.  Squidoo is a user-generated website which uses the concept of a lens as its primary feature. In his ebook "Everyone's an Expert," Godin describes a lens as "[filtering] light and [showing] us what we need to see." Lenses are much like blog posts, except they're on a single subject. The site also allows content creators to earn revenue from referral links to sites like Amazon.com and Ebay.  The users who create lenses are called "lensmasters". A lensmaster can be anyone with an interest in a specific subject; they do not necessarily have to be externally-recognized experts. In Squidoo's early stages, Godin noted that Martha Stewart and Jane Goodall's lenses did not receive large amounts of traffic, whereas lenses on MySpace and the online game Line Rider were among the site's most successful. Squidoo contains lenses on 22 different topics, including Health & Medicine, Food & Cooking, and Business. -Wikipedia.org

3. Associated Content

Associated Content (AC) is an online publisher and distributor of original content. Associated Content enables anyone to publish their content on any topic, and distributes that content through its website and content partners. If they are US Residents AC pays them for their work, No payment options are available for non-legal residents of the United States.  In contrast to many content publishing sites, AC does pay many users for content up front. Articles are usually required to be have at least 400 words and may include pictures from approved sources. The "Assignment Desk" is another source of article ideas and income for writers. AC displays predefined article titles and users can "claim" the assignment. All on-site assignments (as opposed to "Partner Assignments") pay performance-based revenue while some also pay up-front payment. Only authors who are over 18 years old and are US citizens or legal residents are eligible for up-front payments. Users may also submit content for publication without an up-front payment. Slideshows and fiction submissions generally do not receive up-front payments. All articles written by users who agree to the contract are eligible to receive payments based on the number of times their content is viewed. -Wikipedia.org

2. About

About.com is an online source for original information and advice. It is written in English, and is aimed primarily at North Americans. It is owned by The New York Times Company. About.com is divided into topic sites, which are grouped into channels and cover diverse subjects such as home repair, pediatrics, model railroading, atheism and weather. The content is written by a network of writers, referred to as Guides, who have experience in the subject they look after. Each Guide looks after one subject only, and is the exclusive writer for that subject. Content on the site can vary between articles, online courses, interactive quizzes, videos and so forth.  Guides are compensated with a base stipend plus bonuses for increased traffic; according to About.com, several guides are averaging over $100,000 per year, although the exact number is not disclosed. -Wikipedia.org

1. Google Knol

Knol is a Google project that aims to include user-written articles on a range of topics. The project was led by Udi Manber of Google, announced December 13, 2007, and was opened in beta to the public on July 23, 2008 with a few hundred articles mostly in the health and medical field. Knol has no policies regarding sources or neutrality. Some Knol pages are opinion papers of one or more authors, and others describe products for sale. Some articles are how-to articles or explain product use. Other people can post comments below an article, such as to refute opinions or reject product claims.

Knol pages are "meant to be the first thing someone who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read", according to Udi Manber. Any contributors can create (and own) new Knol articles, and there can be multiple articles on the same topic, each written by a different author. Pundits have consistently decried the hundreds of repetitive entries that result from this system. Because multiple articles can have the same title, readers find a topic by searching, rather than just by title. The authors have an option to allow their articles to be edited by the public, to make them editable only to co-authors or to make them closed entirely. -Wikipedia.org

Hey Spill Guy

This is Jonathan from Kontera. Thanks for including us in your round up of ways to monetize online. I just wanted to remind your readers that Kontera is a great advertising option for any text heavy website, not just HubPages.

What makes Kontera so effective is our Contextual Technology, an algorithm that rather than just scan for keywords like competing networks do, can actually read webpages for meaning, leading to more effective and relevant ads to display. These more target ads bring publishers higher CTR and better CPC.

Another advantage of Kontera is our exclusive ad inventory from such brand names as Sprint, L'Oreal, Microsoft, Kmart, National Geographic, Dove, and more. These premium, often Rich-Media ads are the most attractive to site visitors, bring in the best CPC, and can only be seen on the Kontera network.

For anyone interested in joining Kontera, we're currently offering new publishers a 70% revenue share, which is the best rate in the industry. We're also offering new publishers a $50 bonus if they reach at least 25,000 U.S. page views during their first 30 days on the network. Additionally, we recently lowered our minimum payout threshold from $100 to $50 across all payout types, meaning all publishers are getting their revenue faster than ever.

You can read more about what Kontera has to offer on our Publisher's Page: http://www.kontera.com/publishers

Thanks,

- Jonathan Cohen

Nice list. Personally I prefer Suite101. Great site and great community. The editors are nice and informative, really taking an interest in training writers to become better web authors.
